For the first time in 42 years, Sydney's beloved Newtown Festival will not be going ahead.

Organisers have confirmed that the 2020 has been cancelled due to the COVID-19 restrictions.

"This decision has not been taken lightly, however the health and safety of our community and festival attendees are our priority," a statement posted on the festival website reads.

"We would like to say a big thank you to all past artists, stall holders, local businesses, sponsors and festival goers who have supported Newtown Festival, and Newtown Neighbourhood Centre, for the past 41 years.

"It is a rare thing now for a community event to run consistently for all these years and this is an event which is truly 'by the people, for the people'.

"We know this will be disappointing for many people and we will keep you posted on future plans once the health situation is in hand. We are sure something special will emerge for the future."

The 2019 Newtown Festival featured a stack of big-name acts last October, including The Buoys, The Delta Riggs, Murray Cook's Soul Movers and SCABZ.
