Victoria's popular Melbourne Prize for Music returns this year with entries officially opening today. 

Launched in 2004 to recognise and reward talent as well as encourage creative development, the $60,000 prize is open to all Victorian musicians, performers and composers, while an additional $40,000 will be given out in four other categories - the Distinguished Musicians Fellowship, the Development Award, the Beleura Emerging Composers Award and the Civic Choice Award.

“Victoria is renowned for its vibrant music sector. This year we are excited to announce a change to the the $60,000 Melbourne Prize for Music 2019 which will shift its focus to seek Victoria's most outstanding musician or group,” Melbourne Prize Trust Executive Director Simon Warrender said.

“The Prize and Awards recognise and reward excellence and talent across all music genres and career stages and have been made possible by the generous support of our partners and patrons, all of whom understand the importance of providing opportunities to develop the local music sector, adding to our community in so many ways."

This year's judges include Eurovision 2019 Australia representative Kate Miller-Heidke, Helen Marcou, Professor Paul Grabowsky AO, Professor Liza Lim and Melissa King.

Entries close at 5pm on Monday 22 July, before finalists are revealed on Wednesday 4 September and finally the winners on Wednesday 13 November.
